Gender differences in patients undergoing percutaneous closure of patent foramen ovale – the PAL-Registry

Percutaneous closure of a patent foramen ovale (PFO) to prevent recurrent paradoxical thromboembolic events has proven to be safe and effective.

However, there is limited data on gender-specific differences among patients. This research project is proposed to determine gender differences in clinical profile, procedural characteristics, and echocardiographic and clinical outcomes, based on a community-based registry.

Since 2017, all patients undergoing percutaneous PFO closure at LUKS have been enrolled in the PAL Registry. To enable long-term follow-up analysis, the study aims to include the first 250 patients from the PAL Registry.

The primary endpoint will be effective PFO closure, assessed by contrast echocardiography after six months.

Secondary endpoints include procedural safety/efficacy and major adverse cardiovascular events.

Differences between men and women will be analyzed.
